Water Heater Leak Repair: What to Check Before You Call

A leaking water heater can come from a loose connection, pressure issue, temperature and pressure relief valve, drain valve, tank seam, or nearby plumbing. First reduce the risk of flooding and scalding, then determine where the water appears to originate without disassembling the heater.

Immediate Safety Steps

If water is spreading, turn off the cold-water supply to the heater if it is safe to reach. For a gas unit, use the gas control according to the manufacturer instructions and do not create a flame near leaking gas. For an electric unit, turn off the heater circuit if the electrical area is dry and accessible. Never touch electrical equipment standing in water.

Finding the Source

Dry the area around the heater and watch for the first place that becomes wet. Water may travel down the side of the tank from a fitting above, making the visible puddle misleading. Check connections, the drain valve, the relief-valve discharge pipe, and the tank base without removing covers or operating unfamiliar controls.

What the Provider May Check

A small connection leak may have a different solution from water emerging at the tank seam. Corrosion, a faulty valve, excessive pressure, sediment, and condensation can each produce different symptoms. A tank that is leaking through its body generally cannot be restored by tightening an external fitting.

Repair or Replacement

Age, tank condition, fuel type, capacity, installation space, venting, and local connections can affect the choice between repair and replacement. A repair may make sense when a replaceable component has failed and the tank remains sound. Replacement may be more practical when the tank itself is corroded or several components are deteriorating.

Preparing for Help

Have the model information, fuel type, approximate age, and recent symptoms ready. Clear access to the heater and mention whether hot water has changed, the relief valve has discharged, or the leak worsens during heating. Do not rely on a bucket as a long-term solution.

When to Call

Contact a qualified local provider when the source is unclear, the leak continues after the supply is shut off, or the heater is near electrical equipment. Ask what caused the leak, whether the unit can be safely repaired, and what temporary steps are appropriate while decisions are made.
